According to the 'MSN Weather Report', average temperatures in Pune during January look something like this.

January Avg Low: 11° Avg High: 30°

Which is why as I lay in bed sniffling and coughing, burning with fever, all I could think was, 'Are you kidding me?'
The mercury has slipped to new low, literally adding to the chill caused by the sensex crash earlier last week. Today's newspaper blared the headline, "Coldest day in two decades - city records a minimum of 5.8 degrees" - that's more than five degrees below normal. Last winter's lowest was 9.1 degrees, in December 2006. The last few days have been very, very cold! Ask me.

Most of us in the hostel here don't even possess too many warm clothes - perceived by some as an unnecessary luxury. All we have are some light-weather jackets (i.e. wind-cheaters) and thickish sweatshirts. Unprepared for the cold, most of us were caught napping at the wrong time. To cut a long story short, half of the hostel population is now afflicted with viral fever. (Viral really seems to travel fast in the hostel where we all dine at the same mess, drinking water from the same glasses rinsed over and recycled).

I have been bed-ridden for more than a couple of days now. I was not at all ready to tackle the cold wave - weather in the days preceding this sudden climactic about-turn had been quite pleasant and even tending heavily towards the warmer side. Which, I might add, is perfectly commonplace for Pune. I had already consigned my winter-wear to the trunk and was even riding my bike in the evenings without even a wind-cheater. That's how I caught the flu, and suffered from high fever as a consequence. To add to my woes, the antibiotic I took to alleviate my misery gave me a huge bruise on my upper lip as a gruesome side-effect (and I'm seriously sick of explaining people how I got my lip disfigured - half of them think I got into a fight, while the others believe...hem, hem...).

Not even close to being the perfect way to spend the weekend - far from it. On a more positive note, finally got to finish watching all episodes of 'That 70s show' lounging in bed. Also, got some really whacky ideas to try out this semester - as they say, nothing like an idle mind.
