Jal had a daunting task ahead of them when they set out to make the follow-up album to the immensely successful
Aadat. The band, realizing this, took their time with their second effort and even roped in notable Pakistani musician Mekaal Hasan as the producer for their second album
Boondh – A Drop of Jal.
The results are evident from the first song itself on this album, 'Sajni'. The production quality is strikingly better than their
Aadat days. Farhan Saeed Butt has also raised his game on vocals significantly. He sounds brilliant on the rock version and even better on the slower version of the same.
Goher Mumtaz's compositions seem to have matured as well as is evident from tracks like 'Humein Itna Pyaar' and 'Mahia', to which he also provides his smooth, baritone vocals. The camera shy Shazi is solid as ever on bass. The band seem to have taken their chemistry to a higher level this time around and they really come to life on 'Main Mast Hoon'. Though Jal have retained their pop-rock, college band sound in this album, 'Humein Itna Pyaar' and 'Moray Piya' should please older audiences as well.
The 2 filler tracks on this album are a treat as well. 'Sajni (Slow Version)' as mentioned earlier sounds better than the original version and the same can be said for 'Humein Itna Pyaar (Slow Version)'
Any Jal fan would be absolutely pleased with this album. For those expecting a hard, heavy album, 'Kia se Kia' is the closest Jal comes to hard rock.
'Boondh' should silence critics who say that Jal does not experiment enough and call them a one-hit wonder. All in all, this is a thoroughly enjoyable album which looks set to take Jal to greater heights.
