Mumbai is a city waiting to explode, a ticking timebomb. Its under equipped and over utilised and the way things are its only going to get worse.
Trains for me are a pet peeve. If your a resident of Mumbai u just cannot avoid the trains , they say trains are Mumbai's lifeline but are also also responsible for deaths, well the recent facts do suggest that.I am one of the unfortunate lot that travel by trains everyday. It jus seems that the no of people in the train just keeps growing everyday. According to a study its been revealed that a train built to house 1700 people actually carries 5000, thats 3 times the norm!
Our railways system is probably one of the best in the world. They use one of the most advanced systems for accident prevention and signaling. Our railway minster has been doing a good job wrt the price control and other amenities.
Capacities have been increased, avg waiting time between trains has been reduced to less than 3 mins from 7 mins and it is expected to be reduced to less than 2 mins.
But we must accept one fact that even that wont be enough, everyday only more and more people will board the trains, recent study has revealed that 20,000 people have died on the tracks or due to train related accidents in the past 5 yrs. Thats not a gr8 figure and sadly the nos have not shown a gr8 trend as far as coming down is concerned.
one may blame general lack of civic sense and other factors, i have nothing against the railways but somewhere we have to accept the fact that no matter what is done this system will remain over utilised and this gap between demand and capacity will never be bridged and sadly more people will die.
Mumbai's future looks bleak and we need to understand that our railways have reached a peak beyond which growth wont b possible & we need 2 look at alternatives. The Bandra -Worli sealink shud be done by dec 31 according to latest reports, metro rail has been given a nod but that will take another 10 yrs to become functional. So the prognosis does not look good for our beloved city and it could very well be left fractured and we may not have any time to prevent this meltdown.
What do you think? Am i being to pessimistic or is it a grave truth.........well only time will tell....
PEACE
